How to convert CGPA to percentage How to convert CGPA to percentage

Application forms, job portals and visa files often ask for a percentage, while your transcript shows a CGPA. Knowing how to convert CGPA to percentage properly matters, because each board and university uses its own formula, and a wrong conversion can cost you an eligibility cut-off or raise questions at verification.

This guide explains the official formulas for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria, shows worked examples, and covers the mistakes people make most often. For quick answers, our free converter applies each formula for you.

What CGPA actually represents

CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is the credit-weighted average of your grade points across all semesters. Grade points are bands, not exact marks: an “A” might cover everything from 80% to 89%. That’s why converting back to a percentage is always an estimate, and why official bodies publish a fixed formula so everyone uses the same estimate.

How to convert CGPA to percentage in India

Indian boards and universities mostly use 10-point scales, but the formulas differ:

Institution Formula CGPA 8.0 becomes
CBSE (Class 10 and 12) CGPA × 9.5 76%
Anna University CGPA × 10 80%
VTU (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 72.5%
University of Mumbai 7.1 × CGPI + 11 67.8%

CBSE’s 9.5 factor was derived from the average relationship between grade points and marks in past board results. Several universities, including many state universities, simply multiply by 10, while others publish formulas like VTU’s or Mumbai’s in their ordinance. When a form doesn’t specify, use your own university’s formula and write it next to the figure.

How to convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan

Pakistani universities use 4.0 scales, but there’s no single national conversion. Many universities publish their own equivalence tables, and some transcripts already show percentages. Where you need an estimate, the common approach is linear: percentage = CGPA ÷ 4 × 100, so a 3.2 CGPA becomes 80%.

For HEC degree attestation, scholarships or foreign admissions, request your university’s official equivalence letter rather than relying on the linear estimate. It carries far more weight.

Bangladesh: the UGC uniform grading system

Bangladesh’s University Grants Commission set a uniform grading table for public and private universities:

Marks Letter Grade point
80% and above A+ 4.00
75–79% A 3.75
70–74% A− 3.50
65–69% B+ 3.25
60–64% B 3.00
55–59% B− 2.75
50–54% C+ 2.50
45–49% C 2.25
40–44% D 2.00
Below 40% F 0.00

To convert a CGPA, find the band it falls in and interpolate. A 3.60 sits between 3.50 (70%) and 3.75 (75%), so it corresponds to about 72%. A linear ÷ 4 × 100 conversion would give 90%, which badly overstates it. This is the most common mistake in Bangladeshi applications.

Nigeria: the 5.0 scale and degree classes

Nigerian universities grade on a 5.0 scale set by the National Universities Commission. Employers usually ask for the class of degree rather than a percentage:

  • First Class: 4.50–5.00
  • Second Class Upper (2:1): 3.50–4.49
  • Second Class Lower (2:2): 2.40–3.49
  • Third Class: 1.50–2.39
  • Pass: 1.00–1.49

When a percentage is required, the usual estimate is linear: CGPA ÷ 5 × 100. A 4.2 becomes 84%. Foreign universities often convert Nigerian degrees by class instead, so include both.

How to convert a percentage back to CGPA

Reverse the formula. For CBSE, divide by 9.5; for VTU, divide by 10 and add 0.75; for Mumbai, subtract 11 and divide by 7.1. For Bangladesh, find the percentage band and interpolate the grade point. The converter’s reverse mode does this automatically, which helps when a scholarship states a minimum percentage and you want to know the CGPA it implies.

CGPA versus GPA

A GPA usually covers one term; a CGPA covers the whole programme. US-style GPAs use a 4.0 scale with letter grades; see our GPA Calculator if you need to calculate one. Converting an Indian 10-point CGPA into a US 4.0 GPA is a different problem again, usually handled by credential evaluators such as WES, which assess each course.

Common mistakes

  • Using CGPA × 10 when your university has its own formula.
  • Applying a linear 4.0 conversion to Bangladeshi grades.
  • Rounding up before converting; convert first, then round to two decimals.
  • Leaving out the formula on forms, which invites questions during verification.
  • Mixing semester GPA and cumulative CGPA.

Summary

The right way to convert CGPA to percentage depends on who issued the grade: ×9.5 for CBSE, ×10 for Anna University, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for VTU, 7.1 × CGPI + 11 for Mumbai, the UGC table for Bangladesh, and ÷5 × 100 (plus class of degree) for Nigeria. Pakistan has no single rule, so an official university letter beats any estimate. Use the converter for quick checks, and quote the formula whenever you report a converted figure.
