What is the Lorem Ipsum Generator?

The Lorem Ipsum Generator produces placeholder text in the amount and shape you need: a number of paragraphs, sentences or words, optionally wrapped in HTML paragraph tags or list items, starting with the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” or with a random opening. It is for filling a layout so you can judge typography, spacing and line length before the real copy exists. Generated in your browser, copied with one click.

How to use it

1. Choose the unit: paragraphs, sentences or words.
2. Set how many. Five paragraphs fills a typical article template; 40 words fills a card.
3. Toggle HTML output if you are pasting into code, and choose paragraph or list markup.

When placeholder text helps and when it lies to you

Lorem ipsum is useful because it has roughly the letter frequency and word length of European languages without any meaning to distract from the design. It fails when the real content will not look like that: headlines are shorter than lorem sentences, product names are longer, German runs 30 percent longer than English, and a testimonial from a real customer has rhythm that filler does not. Designers who only test with lorem ipsum ship layouts that break on the first real headline. Where the text comes from

The standard passage is a scrambled extract from Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, in use as printers’ filler since the 1500s and standardised by Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s. This generator uses the traditional vocabulary so the output looks like every other lorem ipsum, which is the point: nobody stops to read it.

Tips

• Generate slightly more than you need, then cut; it is easier than regenerating.
• For a blog template, mix paragraph lengths so it looks like real writing.
• Replace lorem in headings with a real headline of the right length before sign-off.
