Lorem Ipsum: When Placeholder Text Helps, When It Lies to You, and What to Use Instead

Lorem Ipsum: When Placeholder Text Helps, When It Lies to You, and What to Use Instead Lorem Ipsum: When Placeholder Text Helps, When It Lies to You, and What to Use Instead

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” has been the standard placeholder text since a typesetter first used it in the 1500s, and it’s still in every design tool because it does one job well: it looks like language without being readable, so the eye evaluates the layout instead of the words. That same property is its weakness. Lorem ipsum has an unusually even rhythm, no headlines that run long, no numbers, no short punchy sentences, and no ugly real-world edge cases. Designs that look perfect with it break the moment real copy arrives. This guide covers where it came from, when to use it, when it lies to you, and the alternatives that don’t.

Where it comes from

The text is scrambled Latin from Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC), a treatise on ethics. “Lorem ipsum” is a fragment of “dolorem ipsum”, “pain itself”. It became standard in print typesetting and then shipped in Aldus PageMaker in the 1980s, which is how every designer since has ended up with it. Because it is corrupted Latin, it has no meaning to distract a client reviewing a layout, which was the original point.

When it’s the right choice

  • Early layout and typography decisions, when you are judging column width, line height, type scale and spacing and the content genuinely doesn’t exist yet.
  • Component libraries and design systems, where a card or list item needs “some text” that stays neutral across a hundred instances.
  • Testing text overflow at a chosen length, since you can generate exactly 40 or 400 words.

The Lorem Ipsum Generator produces a set number of paragraphs, sentences or words, with the option to start with the classic opening line or not, and copies as plain text or HTML paragraphs.

When it lies to you

  1. Headlines. Lorem ipsum headlines are always short and even. Real headlines are “Q3 Results: Revenue Up 14%, Guidance Lowered Amid Supply Constraints” and they wrap to three lines on mobile. Test with real headlines, or with the longest one your CMS allows.
  2. Buttons and labels. “Lorem” fits any button. “Continue to payment method” does not. Design buttons with the real string, then translate it to German, which is 30% longer, and check again.
  3. Numbers and dates. Lorem ipsum has none. Tables, prices, timestamps and phone numbers use tabular figures and align differently.
  4. Empty and short states. A list with three lorem items looks fine. A list with one item, or none, is the state users hit first. Design that.
  5. Reading comprehension. Nobody reads lorem ipsum, so nobody notices that the text hierarchy makes no sense: the eye is not drawn to the thing that matters because nothing matters. Real copy exposes weak hierarchy immediately.
  6. Stakeholder feedback. Clients shown lorem ipsum comment on colours. Clients shown real copy comment on whether the page makes the case. The second conversation is the one you need.

Better placeholders

  • Real copy, even rough. Ask for the draft. A bad first draft of the actual text teaches you more than perfect lorem ipsum.
  • Proto-content. Write the content structure yourself: “[Headline: benefit statement, 6–10 words] [Subhead: who it’s for] [Three feature bullets, each with a 4-word label]”. Designers who do this become better writers and ship fewer surprises.
  • Representative samples. Pull the longest product name, the longest customer name, the most common error message from the real system.
  • Stress text. Deliberately long, deliberately short, with a 30-character unbroken string (an email address, a URL) to check wrapping. The Character Counter helps you hit the exact limits a CMS enforces.
  • Themed generators (bacon ipsum, cupcake ipsum, corporate ipsum) are fun but have the same rhythm problem; use them for the same limited purposes as the original.

Lorem ipsum in shipped sites

It ends up live more often than anyone admits: a hidden section, a template default, a “coming soon” card nobody finished. It looks careless, and it is a searchable string, so a quick site search for “lorem” before launch is worth thirty seconds. Google won’t penalise it, but it will index it, and a page whose main content is Latin gibberish is thin content by definition.

A sensible rule

Lorem ipsum for the first hour of a layout; real or representative copy for everything after that. If the real copy doesn’t exist yet, that is itself information: the project has a content problem, and no amount of placeholder text will design around it.

Frequently asked questions

What does “lorem ipsum” mean?

It’s a fragment of “dolorem ipsum”, Latin for “pain itself”, from a scrambled passage of Cicero. The full text is not grammatical Latin.

Is it bad to use lorem ipsum in a design?

Not for early layout work. It becomes a problem when it stays past the point where real content would change design decisions.

Does lorem ipsum affect SEO if left on a page?

There’s no specific penalty, but a page of placeholder text is thin content and will not rank, and it looks unprofessional to visitors.

How many words of lorem ipsum should I use?

Match the real content’s expected length. A product description is 50–150 words; a blog intro 100–200. Generating 1,000 words for a card layout hides the fact that the card will hold 30.
