The space bar is the most-pressed key on any keyboard, so it’s usually the first to wear out, get sticky, or stop registering. If you’re here because of a spacebar not working problem, the good news is that most causes are cheap to fix and take minutes. This guide goes from the quickest checks to the last resorts, for laptops, desktops and mechanical keyboards, on Windows and Mac.
First, confirm what’s happening: run the spacebar counter and press the key 20 times slowly. Fewer than 20 means dropped presses; more than 20 means the switch is bouncing and double-typing. That tells you whether the problem is mechanical or software.

1. Rule out software first
- Restart. A stuck driver or a background app grabbing input is the single most common cause, and a reboot clears it.
- Test in another app. If space works in Notepad but not in a game or browser, the problem is that app: check its key bindings and any extensions or overlays.
- Turn off Sticky Keys and Filter Keys (Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard). Filter Keys ignores brief presses, which feels exactly like a dead space bar.
- Check the language and input method. Some IME modes swallow space to select suggestions.
- Update or reinstall the keyboard driver. In Device Manager, uninstall the keyboard and restart; Windows reinstalls it.
2. Clean under the key
Crumbs, dust and spilled drinks are the usual culprits on a spacebar not working intermittently. Turn the keyboard off or unplug it, hold it upside down and tap the back, then blow compressed air under the key at a low angle. On a desktop or mechanical keyboard you can pull the keycap (gently, with a keycap puller; the space bar has a stabiliser bar underneath, so lift from the middle) and clean the switch with a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry fully before reassembling.
3. Fix a bouncing or double-typing space bar
If the counter shows more presses than you made, the switch contacts are chattering. On mechanical keyboards this is typical of ageing switches. Options, in order:
- Clean the switch as above; debris causes most chatter.
- Use the keyboard’s software or firmware “debounce” setting, if it has one, and raise it slightly.
- Install a debounce utility. Windows has several free ones; on Mac, Karabiner-Elements can add a delay.
- On a hot-swap keyboard, replace the switch. On a soldered board, that’s a repair job.
4. Laptop-specific fixes
Laptop keys are membrane switches with a plastic scissor mechanism. If the space bar is wobbly or sits low, the scissor clip may have popped out: lift the key carefully, reseat the clips and press down until it clicks. If a corner of the key doesn’t respond, the membrane under that corner is worn and the keyboard usually needs replacing, which on most laptops is a modest part but a fiddly job. As a bridge, plug in an external keyboard.
5. Remap another key to space
If the switch is dead and a repair has to wait, remap a key you rarely use, such as Right Alt, Caps Lock or the Menu key, to act as space. On Windows use PowerToys Keyboard Manager; on Mac, Karabiner-Elements; on Linux, xmodmap or the desktop’s keyboard settings. Gamers can also bind jump to another key in-game. The spacebar counter with Count any key switched on confirms the new mapping registers.
6. When it’s the keyboard itself
Try the keyboard on another computer. If space fails there too, the hardware is at fault. Wireless keyboards: change the battery and re-pair. USB keyboards: try another port and, if you’re on a hub, plug in directly. If nothing helps, replacement is usually cheaper than a repair, but a mechanical keyboard with hot-swap switches can be fixed with a single new switch.
Preventing it next time
- Keep drinks away from the keyboard; sugary liquids are the worst.
- Blow the keyboard out every couple of months.
- If you game hard on the space bar, consider a mechanical keyboard with hot-swap switches so a worn switch is a two-minute swap.
Summary
For a spacebar not working: reboot and test in another app, turn off Filter Keys, clean under the key, then treat double-typing with debounce or a switch swap. Laptop keys can be reseated but worn membranes need a new keyboard, and a remapped key covers you until then. Test before and after with the spacebar counter.
