A spacebar counter counts how many times you press the space bar, either freely for as long as you like or in a timed test of 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds that reports presses per second. It ignores key auto-repeat, so holding the key down counts as one press, and it shows a big on-screen key you can tap on a phone or tablet. Best scores are saved in your browser.
Tick Count any key to test other keys: every key press counts and the last key you hit is shown, which makes it a quick way to check that a key on your keyboard registers at all.
| Presses per second | Rating | Typical for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 4 | Warming up | One finger, laptop keyboard |
| 4 to 6 | Average | Most people using a thumb |
| 6 to 8 | Good | Two thumbs, light mechanical switch |
| 8 to 11 | Fast | Practised gamers |
| 11+ | Elite | Very light switches, two-hand alternating |
Compare within the same duration: a 5-second burst is always faster than a 60-second average. Space bar speed matters in games where jumping, dashing or bunny-hopping is tied to the key, and in rhythm games that map notes to space.
If the space bar feels unreliable, run a free count and press the key slowly 20 times. If the count is lower than 20, presses are being dropped; if it’s higher, the switch is bouncing and registering double presses. Both point to a worn or dirty switch. The guide on a spacebar not working walks through the fixes, from cleaning to key remapping. With Count any key on, you can check each key in turn and see its name appear.
The tool listens for key-down events and discards repeats generated by the operating system when a key is held, so only real presses count. Timing uses the browser’s high-resolution clock. Space presses are only captured while the counter is on screen, so the key still works normally elsewhere on the page. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere; best scores stay in your browser’s local storage.
Measure mouse speed with the CPS Test, and read the guide on fixing a spacebar not working. For how key switches register presses, see this overview of keyboard technology.

Spacebar Not Working? Fixes From Quick to Last Resort
Spacebar not working? Software checks, cleaning under the key, fixing double typing, laptop scissor clips, remapping a key and when to replace.
The page needs keyboard focus. Click on the counter once, then press. If you’re typing in a text field, presses go to the field instead.
No. Auto-repeat is filtered out, so a held key counts once. Release and press again to add to the count.
Yes. Tap the drawn SPACE key or the counter itself. Multi-finger taps count separately.
Only if your controller is mapped to send keyboard input. For controllers, use a gamepad tester instead.
It counts every key press (except modifier shortcuts) and shows the name of the last key, so you can test a specific key or the whole keyboard.
No. It counts until you press Reset, and your highest free-count total is saved as a best score.
