What this tool does

Text copied out of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot often arrives full of formatting that only made sense inside the chat window: double asterisks around bold words, hash signs in front of headings, pipe characters from tables, backticks around code, and em dashes everywhere. Some copies also carry characters you cannot see at all, such as zero-width spaces and non-breaking spaces, which break search, word counts and code.

The ChatGPT Text Cleaner strips all of that in one pass and gives you plain text you can paste into an email, a Word document, a CMS, a spreadsheet or a social post. It works on text from any AI assistant, and on any other markdown too.

How to use it

1. Paste your text into the left box, upload a .txt or .md file, or drag a file onto the box.
2. Pick where the text is going: Plain text, Email & docs, Social post or Hidden characters only.
3. The clean version appears on the right as you type. Press Copy (or Ctrl + Enter) or download it as a .txt file.

Open Options to control each rule. Your choices are saved in your browser for next time.

What gets cleaned

• Markdown: headings (#), bold and italic (** and _), strikethrough, inline code and code fences, block quotes, horizontal rules and footnote references. Code inside code blocks is kept exactly as it was.
• Tables: converted to tab-separated rows that paste straight into Excel or Google Sheets, or to simple “A | B” lines.
• Lists: bullets become a plain dash, a • dot, or no marker. Numbered lists stay numbered, and task lists become ☐ and ☑.
• Links: keep only the link text, the text with the URL in brackets, or only the URL.
• Em dashes: replaced with a comma, a spaced hyphen, or split into two sentences. En dashes in number ranges become simple hyphens.
• Curly quotes and ellipses: turned into straight quotes and three dots, which is safer for code, CSV files and older systems.
• Hidden characters: zero-width spaces and joiners, byte-order marks, soft hyphens, direction marks and unusual spaces such as non-breaking and narrow no-break spaces.
• Citation marks: leftovers such as [1], 【4:0†source】 and the invisible citation markers some chat apps add when you copy an answer with sources.
• Optional: emojis, and the typical opening and closing lines of AI answers (“Certainly! Here’s…”, “Let me know if you’d like…”).
• Spacing: double spaces, spaces before punctuation, trailing spaces and long runs of empty lines.

The tool is careful about things that look like markdown but are not: maths such as 2*3, hashtags such as #marketing, and words_with_underscores in file names and URLs are left alone.

Private by design

The cleaning happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, stored or logged, so it is safe to use with client work, drafts and anything confidential. It handles long documents too: several megabytes of text are cleaned in well under a second on a normal laptop.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT text have asterisks and hash signs when I paste it?

ChatGPT writes its answers in markdown, a lightweight formatting language. The chat window turns **word** into bold and ## into a heading, but many apps do not understand markdown, so the raw symbols show up when you paste. This tool removes the symbols and keeps the words.

Does it remove AI watermarks?

It removes hidden Unicode characters such as zero-width spaces, which are sometimes described as watermarks. Major AI companies have not said that they hide such characters in normal answers; they usually come from copying and pasting between apps. Either way, if they are in your text, this tool removes them and tells you how many it found. It does not change your wording, so it will not make AI-written text “undetectable”.

Will it change my words?

No. It only removes formatting symbols, invisible characters and spacing problems, and swaps a few punctuation marks you choose (such as em dashes). The two optional rules that remove whole lines, emojis and AI opening/closing phrases, are off unless you switch them on.

Can I keep the bullet points?

Yes. Choose “• dot” or “- dash” under List bullets, or “Leave as is”. The Email & docs preset uses • bullets by default.

What is the best setting for Word or Google Docs?

Use the Email & docs preset. It keeps curly quotes (which look right in documents), uses • bullets and keeps link addresses in brackets so nothing is lost.

Does it work with Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity?

Yes. All of them use the same markdown conventions, and Perplexity-style citation numbers such as [1] are removed as well.
