What is the Random Quote Generator?

The Random Quote Generator gives you a quotation with its author from a curated set, filtered by category: motivation, work, creativity, wisdom, humour and more. Click for another, copy it with one click, or share it. It is meant for the everyday jobs where you need a short line quickly: a presentation opener, a newsletter sign-off, a social post, a classroom warm-up, or an epigraph for a chapter. The quotes live in the page, so it works offline and nothing is tracked.

How to use it

  1. Pick a category, or leave it on All.
  2. Click Generate. A quote and author appear.
  3. Click again for the next one; use Copy to grab the text with attribution.
  4. Before publishing, take thirty seconds to verify the attribution (see below).

Verify before you post

A large share of the quotes circulating online are misattributed. Einstein did not say most of what is credited to him, Mark Twain gets every witty remark of the 19th century, and several “ancient Chinese proverbs” were written by advertising copywriters. Posting a famous fake on a company account is a small but real embarrassment, and citing one in an essay costs marks. The quick check: search the exact phrase with the author’s name and the word “misattributed” or look it up on Quote Investigator. If the only sources are quote websites and posters, treat it as unverified and either find the real source or attribute it as “often attributed to”. The curated set here favours quotes with a known source, but the check is still yours to do. How to verify, the most common fakes, and the rules on quoting copyrighted text are in how to use quotes without getting them wrong.

Using quotes well

  • Shorter is stronger. One sentence outperforms a paragraph on a slide.
  • Match the quote to the point you are making, not the other way round.
  • Always attribute; “Unknown” is honest if you cannot find the source.
  • Quotes from living authors and recent books are copyrighted; a short quotation with attribution is fine, reproducing a page is not.
