5 Letter Word Finder

Green letters (right letter, right place)

Yellow letters (in the word, wrong place)

Gray letters (not in the word)

Each yellow box matches a position: type the letters that were yellow in that column. Accents are ignored when matching.

What this 5 letter word finder does

This 5 letter word finder helps you solve Wordle-style puzzles by filtering a list of about 3,000 common English five-letter words. Type the letters you already know, from the green, yellow and gray squares in your game, and the list shrinks to the words that still fit. It also suggests the best next guess, the word that would tell you the most about the remaining candidates. This tool is not connected to any game.

How to use it

  1. Type each green letter into the box for its position. Leave the other boxes empty.
  2. For yellow letters, type them in the box of the column where they turned yellow. Several letters can share a box. The tool then knows the letter is in the word but not there.
  3. Type the gray letters in the last field. These are ruled out.
  4. Read the matching words. The list updates as you type, and Best next guess shows three strong options.
  5. Press Reset to start a new puzzle.

How the filtering works

A word stays in the list only if it passes every rule. Green letters must sit in their exact place. Yellow letters must appear somewhere else in the word, never in the column where they were yellow. Gray letters must be absent, with one exception: when a letter is gray but also green or yellow elsewhere, the word has to contain it exactly as many times as you have found it. That handles double letters, such as the second E in a word like geese, correctly.

How the best next guess is chosen

With many words left, the tool counts how many candidates contain each letter. It then scores every candidate by the letters it would test, counting each distinct letter once, and shows the top three. A guess that checks common letters in new positions splits the list fastest. Once only a few words remain, simply pick one of them.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are in the list?

About 3,000 common five-letter English words, ordered with the most frequent first. Rare words may be missing, so if nothing matches, double-check your yellow and gray letters.

Do I have to fill every box?

No. Enter only what you know. Even a single green letter or a handful of gray letters narrows the list.

Is this cheating?

That is up to you. Many people use a finder to check a stuck puzzle or to learn good strategy. Our guide to the best starting words shows how to play well without help.

Why is a valid word in my game missing?

Games often accept thousands of unusual words that are not in a list of common ones. The finder focuses on words people actually use.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The boxes are large and the list is scrollable.
