What is the XML Sitemap Generator?

The XML Sitemap Generator turns a list of URLs into a valid sitemap.xml you can upload to your site and submit to Google and Bing. Paste URLs one per line, set a default last-modified date, change frequency and priority (or leave them off), and download the file. It validates as it goes: relative URLs, duplicates, URLs on a different host and the 50,000-URL limit are all flagged. It runs in your browser and does not crawl your site, which makes it the right tool for static sites, landing-page bundles and hand-curated lists.

How to use it

1. Paste your URLs, one per line. They must be absolute and on the same host.
2. Optionally set lastmod (ISO date), changefreq and priority. You can apply one value to all or edit per line.
3. Click Generate. Errors are listed above the output.
4. Download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site root, and add its URL to robots.txt and Search Console.

What belongs in a sitemap

Only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200: your important pages, posts and product pages. Leave out paginated archives, tag pages with two posts, redirected URLs, noindexed pages and anything behind a login. A sitemap is a hint list, not a command; including junk dilutes it and makes the Search Console report harder to read. When to use this instead of a plugin

• Static sites and hand-built landing pages with no CMS.
• A separate sitemap for a campaign section you want to submit on its own.
• Testing what a sitemap should contain before configuring the plugin’s exclusions.
• WordPress users normally do not need it: Yoast, Rank Math and core WordPress generate one automatically.

Does it crawl my site to find pages?

No. You supply the list. Export it from your CMS, or copy links from a page.

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Above that, split into several files and reference them from a sitemap index.

Do I need lastmod?

It is optional, but if you include it, keep it accurate; Google ignores lastmod on sites where it is obviously wrong.

Where do I submit it?

Google Search Console under Sitemaps, and Bing Webmaster Tools. Also add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt.
