What is the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader?

The YouTube Thumbnail Downloader shows every thumbnail size YouTube stores for a video, from the small 120-pixel default up to the full 1280 by 720 HD image, and lets you download the one you want. Paste a normal watch link, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts link or an embed link, and the images appear instantly. There is no upload, no account and no watermark; the tool simply builds the direct image URLs from the video ID.

How to use it

1. Copy the video URL from YouTube.
2. Paste it and click Get Thumbnails.
3. Choose a size: Max (1280 by 720), Standard (640 by 480), High (480 by 360), Medium (320 by 180) or Default (120 by 90).
4. Click Download, or right-click to copy the image address.

Why the HD version is sometimes missing

YouTube only generates the 1280 by 720 maxresdefault image when the uploader provided a custom thumbnail or the video was uploaded in HD. Older or low-resolution videos have a standard 640 by 480 as their best size. If the Max option shows a grey placeholder, the HD file does not exist and the next size down is the best available. Using thumbnails legally

A thumbnail is part of the video’s copyright and belongs to the uploader. Downloading your own thumbnails to reuse in a blog post, a newsletter or a slide is fine. Using someone else’s for commentary, criticism or news reporting can be fair use, especially at small size with attribution and a link to the video; using it as your own thumbnail, in an ad, or on merchandise is not.
