Image Converter

What is the Image Converter?

The Image Converter changes an image from one format to another, right in your browser: PNG to JPG, JPG to WebP, WebP to PNG, anything to AVIF or BMP. Drop a file, pick the target format, and download the result. Because the decoding and re-encoding happen on your device, the file is never uploaded and there is no size cap, watermark or sign-up.

How to use it

  1. Drag an image onto the drop zone or click to choose one. PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP and AVIF are accepted.
  2. Choose the output format from the dropdown.
  3. Click Download Converted. The new file keeps the original name with the new extension.
  4. Repeat for the next image. For a whole folder that needs the same treatment, the Bulk Image Compressor can output WebP for many files at once.

Which format should you choose?

  • WebP for almost everything on the web. It is 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency, and every current browser displays it.
  • AVIF when you want the smallest possible file and your audience is on modern browsers. It beats WebP by another 20 percent or so, but encoding is slower and a few older devices cannot show it.
  • JPG for photos that must open anywhere, including old email clients and marketplace uploaders that reject WebP.
  • PNG for logos, screenshots and anything with transparency that needs to stay pixel-perfect and lossless.
  • BMP only when a legacy application demands it; the files are huge.

For the full comparison, including which conversions lose information and which are safe to do repeatedly, read image formats explained: JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and which conversions are safe.

Conversions to be careful with

  • PNG to JPG flattens transparency onto white and introduces compression artefacts. Fine for photos saved as PNG by mistake, wrong for logos.
  • JPG to PNG makes the file much larger without adding quality; the artefacts from the JPG are already baked in.
  • Repeated lossy conversions (JPG to WebP to JPG) compound the loss. Convert from the best original you have.
  • HEIC from iPhones cannot be decoded by browsers, so it is not supported here. Export as JPG from the Photos app, or set the camera to “Most Compatible”.

Image Formats Explained: JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and Which Conversions Are Safe

Every image format's job in one table, which conversions are lossless and which destroy quality or transparency, the three conversions people actually need (HEIC→JPEG, PNG→WebP, white background→transparent), and the colour-profile and EXIF traps.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in the browser. You can disconnect after the page loads and it still works.

Is there a file size limit?

No hard limit. AVIF encoding of very large images can take several seconds on a phone.

Does it keep EXIF metadata?

No. Re-encoding strips camera settings and GPS data, which is usually preferable before publishing.

Can I convert animated GIFs or WebP?

Only the first frame is converted; animation is not preserved.

Can I control the quality?

Not here; this tool uses a fixed high-quality setting. For a quality slider and a live size readout, run the file through the Image Compressor after converting.
