What is the Speed Conversion Calculator?

The Speed Converter changes a speed between kilometres per hour, miles per hour, metres per second, knots and feet per second, and also converts between speed and pace, the minutes-per-kilometre or minutes-per-mile figure runners and cyclists use. Enter a value in any unit and every other unit updates, with the exact factor shown. It runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Type a speed in any of the unit boxes; the rest fill in.
  2. Or enter a pace (for example 5:30 per km) to see the equivalent speed and the pace per mile.
  3. Copy the value you need.

The factors

  • 1 km/h = 0.62137 mph = 0.27778 m/s = 0.53996 knots.
  • 1 mph = 1.60934 km/h = 0.44704 m/s.
  • 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km/h exactly.
  • Pace to speed: speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per km. A 5:00 pace is 12 km/h.

Quick mental conversions (mph to km/h: add 60 percent; km/h to mph: multiply by 6 and drop a digit), the running and cycling tables, and why aviation and shipping still use knots are in speed conversion without the guesswork.

Common uses

  • Reading a speed limit or a hire car’s dashboard abroad.
  • Setting a treadmill (km/h or mph) to a target race pace.
  • Converting wind speed between weather sources (knots, km/h, m/s).
  • Physics homework where m/s is required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per km?

Divide the minutes per mile by 1.609. An 8:00 mile is about 4:58 per km. The tool does this for you.

What is a knot?

One nautical mile (1,852 m) per hour, used at sea and in the air because nautical miles match lines of latitude.

Are results exact?

Yes; the factors are defined values and the tool keeps full precision.
