What this Upwork fee calculator does

This Upwork fee calculator shows what you actually keep from a contract, not just the service fee. Upwork’s freelancer fee has been variable since May 2025: each contract gets its own rate between 0% and 15%, shown to you on the offer or proposal screen and fixed for the life of the contract. Enter that rate and the calculator does the rest.

It works three ways:

  • Take-home pay: enter an hourly rate and hours, or a fixed price, and see what reaches your bank after the service fee, the Connects you spent to win the job, withdrawal fees and currency conversion. You also get your real take-home per hour.
  • What to charge: enter what you want to keep, per hour or per project, and get the rate or quote that leaves you exactly that after every cost.
  • Client cost: see what the client pays on top (the marketplace fee and the one-time contract initiation fee) and how much Upwork keeps in total from both sides.

How to use the Upwork fee calculator

  1. Pick Hourly or Fixed price and enter the amount.
  2. Move the Freelancer service fee slider to the percentage Upwork shows on your offer. If you don’t know it yet, 10% is what most freelancers report seeing.
  3. Open Connects, withdrawal and currency to add the hidden costs: how many Connects a proposal needs, how many proposals it usually takes you to win a job, your withdrawal method and how many times you withdraw.
  4. Optionally type your currency code (for example PKR, INR or EUR) and today’s rate to see the result in your own money.
  5. Press Copy breakdown to paste the numbers into a note or a message to a client.

The Upwork fee calculator saves your inputs in your browser, so the calculator opens with your own numbers next time.

The Upwork fees it uses

  • Freelancer service fee: 0–15% per contract, set by Upwork and shown before you accept. Contracts started before May 1, 2025 keep the old tiered fee.
  • Connects: $0.15 each. Most proposals take several, and the cost counts even when you don’t win.
  • Withdrawal: free for US bank transfers; about $0.99 for direct-to-local-bank; around $2 for Payoneer or PayPal; about $30 for a USD wire. These change by country, so check the amount on your Get Paid page and choose Custom if yours differs.
  • Client marketplace fee: around 5% on the Basic plan, 3% for eligible US bank payments and 10% on Business Plus, plus a $0.99–$14.99 contract initiation fee per new contract.

Fees were checked in September 2026. Upwork changes them from time to time, which is why every number here can be edited.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Upwork take from freelancers?

Between 0% and 15% of each payment, depending on the contract. Most freelancers report around 10%. Add Connects and withdrawal fees and the real cost is usually a few points higher, which is what this calculator shows.

How do I know my exact Upwork fee?

Upwork shows the percentage when you submit a proposal or receive an offer, and it doesn’t change once the contract starts. Enter that number in the slider.

How much should I charge to earn $25 an hour on Upwork?

At a 10% fee with no other costs, $27.78 an hour. Open the What to charge tab and add your Connects and withdrawal costs for an exact figure.

Do clients pay fees on Upwork too?

Yes. Clients pay a marketplace fee on top of each payment and a small fee when starting a new contract. The Client cost tab shows both, and the total Upwork keeps.

Are Connects worth counting?

Yes, if you send many proposals. At 12 Connects per proposal and one win in six proposals, you spend $10.80 to land each job. On small fixed-price jobs that can be a bigger bite than the service fee.

Is this calculator official?

No. This Upwork fee calculator is an independent tool built on the fees published in the Upwork Help Center. Always confirm the fee on your own offer screen.
